More than 95 % of these AEP-studies were published after Kenyon et al. introduced a non-invasive electrophysiological approach in 1998 allowing rapid evaluation of hearing and repeated testing of animals. First, our review compares AEP hearing thresholds to behaviorally gained thresholds. Second, baseline hearing abilities are described and compared in 111 fish species out of 51 families. Following this, studies investigating the functional significance of various accessory hearing structures (Weberian ossicles, swim bladder, otic bladders) by eliminating these morphological structures in various ways are dealt with. Furthermore, studies on the ontogenetic development of hearing are summarized. The AEP-technique was frequently used to study the effects of high sound/noise levels on hearing in particular by measuring the temporary threshold shifts after exposure to various noise types (white noise, pure tones and anthropogenic noises). In addition, the hearing thresholds were determined in the presence of noise (white, ambient, ship noise) in several studies, a phenomenon termed masking. Various ecological (e.g., temperature, cave dwelling), genetic (e.g., albinism), methodical (e.g., ototoxic drugs, threshold criteria, speaker choice) and behavioral (e.g., dominance, reproductive status) factors potentially influencing hearing were investigated. Finally, the technique was successfully utilized to study acoustic communication by comparing hearing curves with sound spectra either under quiet conditions or in the presence of noise, by analyzing the temporal resolution ability of the auditory system and the detection of temporal, spectral and amplitude characteristics of conspecific vocalizations.Support from the Austrian Science Fund (FWF grant 22319 to F.L.)

    Preliminary Efforts Directed Toward the Detection of Craving of Illicit Substances: The iHeal Project

    Many behavioral interventions, whether for the management of chronic pain, overeating, medication adherence, or substance abuse, are ineffective outside of the clinic or office environments in which they are taught. This lack of utility has spawned interest in enabling technologies that are capable of detecting changes in affective state that potentially herald a transition to risky behaviors. We have therefore undertaken the preliminary development of “iHeal”, an innovative constellation of technologies that incorporates artificial intelligence, continuous biophysical monitoring, wireless connectivity, and smartphone computation. In its fully realized form, iHeal can detect developing drug cravings; as a multimedia device, it can also intervene as the cravings develop to prevent drug use. In the absence of polyploidy, changes in the amount of repetitive DNA (transposable elements and tandem repeats) are primarily responsible for genome size differences between species. However, there is ongoing debate regarding the relative importance of amplification of repetitive DNA versus its deletion in governing genome size. Using data from 454 sequencing, we analysed the most repetitive fraction of some of the largest known genomes for diploid plant species, from members of Fritillaria. We revealed that genomic expansion has not resulted from the recent massive amplification of just a handful of repeat families, as shown in species with smaller genomes. Instead, the bulk of these immense genomes is composed of highly heterogeneous, relatively low-abundance repeat-derived DNA, supporting a scenario where amplified repeats continually accumulate due to infrequent DNA removal. Our results indicate that a lack of deletion and low turnover of repetitive DNA are major contributors to the evolution of extremely large genomes and show that their size cannot simply be accounted for by the activity of a small number of high-abundance repeat families.Thiswork was supported by the Natural Environment ResearchCouncil (grant no.     Accidents, injuries and safety priorities for light goods vehicles in Great Britain

    This study presents data on light goods vehicle (LGV) crashes. The data are derived from two main sources. The first source involves mass analysis of crashes involving LGVs recorded in the national British STATS19 accident database for 1994 to 2000. The second source involves analysis from an in-depth study of LGV accidents in Britain since the late 1980s. In total, in-depth data on almost 500 LGV crashes are considered. Three main issues are apparent. Firstly, there is an issue of crash compatibility between LGVs and passenger cars. The second issue involves restraint use among LGV occupants, since the in-depth data reveal that use is low compared with car occupants. The third issue is the implications of introducing a regulatory compliance crash test for LGVs

    Augur: a bioinformatics toolkit for phylogenetic analyses of human pathogens

    The analysis of human pathogens requires a diverse collection of bioinformatics tools. These tools include standard genomic and phylogenetic software and custom software developed to handle the relatively numerous and short genomes of viruses and bacteria. Researchers increasingly depend on the outputs of these tools to infer transmission dynamics of human diseases and make actionable recommendations to public health officials (Black et al., 2020; Gardy et al., 2015). In order to enable real-time analyses of pathogen evolution, bioinformatics tools must scale rapidly with the number of samples and be flexible enough to adapt to a variety of questions and organisms. To meet these needs, we developed Augur, a bioinformatics toolkit designed for phylogenetic analyses of human pathogens

    Developing general cultural awareness in a monocultural English as a foreign language context in a Mexican university: a wiki-based critical incident approach

    © 2013 Association for Language Learning. This article explores what the ‘intercultural turn’ might mean in the case of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). The discussion is contextualised in what has been termed the ‘expanding circle’ of English and focuses on an English as a foreign language (EFL) class in a Mexican university, a context where the full implications of a shift from EFL to English as a lingua franca (ELF) have yet to be addressed. We consider how the intercultural turn might be understood in this Mexican context and then present the rationale for, and design of, a technology-based (wiki) extra-curricular pilot project which adopted less of an EFL/cultural and more of an ELF/intercultural approach. We evaluate the evidence from this small-scale project in terms of students\u27 developing general cultural awareness and suggest that this type of project, an example of the intercultural turn, might be more widely applicable in similar ‘expanding circle’ EFL contexts

    Racial classifications of human populations are politically and socially determined. There is no biological or genetic basis for these racial classifications. Health behaviors may be influenced by culture and poverty. Disparities in health outcomes, sometimes resulting in higher mortality rates for African-Americans appear to influence end of life decision-making attitudes and behaviors. To improve the quality of end of life care in African-American communities, health care professionals must better understand and work to eliminate disparities in health care, increase their own skills, knowledge and confidence in palliative and hospice care, and improve awareness of the benefits and values of hospice and palliative care in their patients and families

    The development of a predictive understanding of how atmospheric CO2 enrichment is affecting the primary productivity of the terrestrial biosphere is among the most pressing of ecological challenges. The terrestrial biosphere absorbs c. 25% of anthropogenic carbon (C) emissions (Le Quere et al., 2018). Uncertainty in CO2 effects on ecosystem C uptake is a major constraint in the prediction of C cycling and the provisioning of productivity- related ecosystem services. Grasslands cover c. 25% of the terrestrial area and are an important contributor to the global C balance (Sala et al., 1996). CO2 enrichment stimulates the aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) of most water-limited grasslands by increasing plant water use efficiency (WUE; productivity per unit of transpiration; Morgan et al., 2004; Nowak et al., 2004; Fatichi et al., 2016), but grassland ANPP, as other ecosystem functions, is determined by drivers in addition to water availability which act simultaneously and often interactively with CO2 (Polley et al., 2011). CO2 enrichment usually shows greater stimulation of plant productivity when nitrogen (N) availability is relatively high (Owensby et al., 1994; Reich & Hobbie, 2013; Mueller et al., 2016), for example. Other drivers include precipitation timing (Hovenden et al., 2014), disturbance regimes (Newton et al., 2014), plant species composition (Langley & Megonigal, 2010; Fay et al., 2012; Polley et al., 2012) and soil properties (Epstein et al., 1997, 1998), including soil texture, which influences water availability to plants (Tor-Ngern et al., 2017)
